General Visitors Information

The Durban Botanic Gardens is situated in the City of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is Durban’s oldest public institution and Africa’s oldest surviving botanic garden.

Entrance to the Gardens is FREE.

Donations are appreciated.

The Durban Botanic Gardens is open every day of the year including public holidays.

The following seasonal times apply to the Gardens

  • Summer [16 September – 15 April]: 07h30 – 17h45 daily
  • Winter [16 April – 15 September]: 07h30 – 17h30 daily

Orchid House

  • 09h00 – 17h00 daily

Tea Garden

Open 7 days a week, closed on Christmas day and Good Friday

  • Monday 10h00 – 16h00
  • Tuesday – Sunday 09h00 – 16h00

Golf Tours and Gourmet Café

  • Tuesday till Sunday 08h00 till 16h30

Information Office

The Information Office is situated at the Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Complex and is managed by the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust. The role of this office is to provide visitor’s services to all visitors. The Information Office can provide basic visitor information and will direct the enquiry to the relevant specialist where more information is required.

Refreshments

  • Tea Garden, run by the Natal Anti-TB Association, serves delicious scones and crumpets
  • Gourmet Café cart serves specialty take-away coffees.

Public toilets are situated at the following locations (see map)

  • Above the Tea Garden
  • Parks Head Office
  • Visitors Complex
  • Education Centre – reserved for Education Centre use only.

WiFi

EThekwini Free Wi-Fi is available at the Visitors Complex and Lake area.

Accessibility

Wheelchairs

Nearly all areas of the Garden are accessible by wheelchair. The Information Office at the Visitor Complex does have a wheelchair available for use.

The Gardens provides a range of school curriculum-based educational programmes throughout the year. Our education programme is designed to support teachers in integrating the environment across the school curriculum.
